“Creation as a means of expression”.

Kate Slowey is an ultra-contemporary visual artist based in Sydney. She primarily works in two distinct styles. The first, involving figurative depictions of faces and figures evolved from one-line drawings. The second, involving sculptural and abstract paper cut outs of the female form.

Self-taught, she began by adapting the line drawings of greats such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse but, with time, her practice has developed to draw inspiration from various movements including cubism, post-impressionism and pop-art. She is increasingly drawn to the conceptualist practices of artists such as Damien Hirst and Lee Ufan.

Kate has always used creation as a means of expression and each collection is just that: an expression of central themes in herlife at that moment. ROUND 2 focussed on desire, love, and the introspection that comes with discovering new aspects of yourself through relationships. Move Me: the Prelude drew from loss and grief in a call to action to boldly inhabit the body – to move, to create, to live. Kate’s work is visually unified through the colours and shapes I return to and grounded in emotional depth.

Although autobiographical in nature, just as the personal is political, the personal is also universal and collectors in Australia and around the world have identified with the stories told.

Kate embraces her independence and chooses to serve as artist, exhibitor and dealer of her work. She presents each new collection at an art fair and sells her work exclusively through those fairs and this website. She uses social media to give a glimpse into the creative process and e-commerce to make her art accessible to everyone.
